Drew Walton Takes Victory in Squibb Group Pony Foxhunter Second Round at Sparsholt College

With three Horse of the Year Show places at stake, a great competition unfolded in the Squibb Group Pony Foxhunter Second Round at Sparsholt College in Winchester, Hampshire. As ever, the class was a crucial part of the Pony Premier Show that ran over the course of the weekend and thirty-nine rider and pony combinations battled it out for a top three placing.

After two rounds, the Matthew Hoskins designed course saw the initial field whittled down to seven combinations, all of whom went forward to the third round – the final jump off. This final round saw three treble clears produced, which decided the allocation of those Championship Final tickets.

The fastest treble clear was provided by 15 year-old Drew Walton from Preston, Lancashire and she rode Beverley Watson’s 9 year-old black stallion Trevoulter Ladies Man to victory. Having seen the two riders before her fault, Drew rode with precision to score the first treble clear of the afternoon and her time of 42.53 seconds was to prove fast enough to hold on to first place.

Fifteen year-old Georgina Burchmore-Eames from Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire took second place with Ron Burgundy, a 10 year-old chestnut gelding owned by Jack Eames. This combination also produced three superb clear rounds and they took their place inside the top two after clocking up their third clear in 44.50 seconds.

Third place was taken by 14 year-old Archie Ray from Broadstairs, Kent and he secured the third Horse of the Year Show ticket on Melanie Ray’s 13 year-old bay roan gelding, Tower Hamlets. Archie delivered his third immaculate round in 50.75 seconds.

With the three direct qualifying tickets for the Squibb Group Pony Foxhunter Championship Final at the Horse of the Year Show having been allocated, the combinations in fourth and fifth took home the chance to compete in the Squibb Group Pony Foxhunter Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.
