The Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds got underway this weekend with two show centres holding the 85cm, 95cm, 1.05m and 1.10m second round classes. The Cabin Equestrian Centre in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire was one of those show centres and riders from across Scotland and the North of England flocked to the Scottish showground with the hopes of securing a qualifying ticket to the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool on 12 – 17 November.

Nine of the starting field in the 85cm second round managed to negotiate a first round clear around Course Designer Diane Beaumont’s nine fence track, six went on to complete with nothing to add from the jump-off but with three riders picking up four-faults and only eight qualifying tickets available, all eyes turned to the clock for who would gain a the final ticket.

Ben Fairbrother from Denny in Stirlingshire jumped double clear in 32.09 seconds with Joanne Fairbrother's Mr Monkey Puzzle to take the win. Scott Blair was the only competitor to come close to Ben’s time; he posted a clear round in 33.96 seconds with Lesley Blair’s Thats My Girl III.

The qualifying tickets were distributed to all eight combinations who produced a first round clear in the 1.05m track designed by Diane Beaumont but the placings were still to be decided. Faults were accumulated across the jump-off course leaving the top two places to be battled out between the two combinations who produced double clears.

Lanark’s Megan Cowan came out on top with Amanda Pritchard’s 17 year-old chestnut gelding Hellza Poppin II, a ride which Megan picked up in March. They posted the quickest round of the class crossing the finish line in 44.53 seconds. Close behind in the runners up spot was Avril Johnston and her own Ella Rose MFS.

Only one combination during the first round of the 1.10m second round touched a rail but time faults came into play for just over a third of the starting combinations preventing them from reaching the jump-off. Seven went through to the jump-off but only three could pull a double clear out of the bag.

2018 National Amateur 1.10m Champion Lucinda Stewart from Ayr, Ayrshire dominated the top two with her own Championship ride Cancun II taking the honours. The 10 year-old dark bay gelding crossed the line in 39.18 seconds and it was clear that Lucinda had a plan and stuck to it as her second ride Glow DK came home in a time of 39.20 seconds.
