A busy weekend of competition saw the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds continue at Pyecombe Horse Show at Brendon Stud in Pyecombe, West Sussex. The venue hosted a 0.85cm second round and a 1.10m second round and both were held on Saturday 13th September 2014.

All of the competitors were aiming to collect one of the twelve direct qualifying places on offer in each second round for the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships, which take place at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool during the 19th – 23rd November 2014.

Dodson & Horrell 0.85cm National Amateur Second Round.
This second round attracted thirty-five starters and twenty-four combinations produced a first round clear to continue through to the jump off. Sixteen combinations then went on to secure a double clear, which meant that the clock was to become crucial in deciding the final line-up and the allocation of the qualification places.

The fastest double clear of the class came from 18 year-old Heidi Cousins from Forest Row, East Sussex on board her own 7 year-old bay gelding Flash Lappen. Thirteenth to go in the jump off, this combination saw eight other combinations put in a double clear before them. Knowing that a fast double clear would put them into contention for a place in the Championship Final, Heidi and Flash Lappen delivered a fast but careful round, giving them the victory in just 38.55 seconds.

Natalie Baker, 34, from Southampton, Hampshire took second place on her own 14 year-old black mare, Grankissime. Two foot perfect rounds from this combination saw them return home across the finish line in 39.51 seconds.

Shannon Murrell, 17, from Caterham, Surrey snatched third on My Killerig Lad, a 7 year-old liver chestnut gelding owned by Kate Murrell. This combination delivered their double clear in 41.09 seconds.

A further nine riders also achieved their qualification for the Dodson & Horrell 0.85cm National Amateur Championship Final.
