On Saturday 25th October, Field House Equestrian Centre in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire hosted the penultimate Dodson & Horrell 0.85cm National Amateur Second Round of this year alongside the last of the Dodson & Horrell 1.05m National Amateur Second Rounds.

Each of the starters that came forward to contest  the classes were hoping to claim one of the twelve direct qualifying places on offer for the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships, which take place at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool during the 19th – 23rd November 2014.

Thirty-one combinations came forward to contest this second round and the jump off proved to be well fought after fourteen combinations made it through. With just twelve qualification places on offer, each rider was aiming to secure a double clear and after seven achieved this, the rest of the field tried to secure as low scoring rounds as possible.

The fastest double clear of the class, and subsequent win, was delivered by 43 year-old Tania Lambe from Church Lawton, Stoke on Trent on her own 19 year-old bay gelding Native Caption. Drawn as the penultimate combination to go in the jump off, they took full advantage of having seen the majority of other combinations go before them and went on to put in a fast and foot perfect round, stopping the clock in 38.49 seconds. This time gave them nearly six seconds in hand over second place, a clear win.

Second place went to 46 year-old Pippa Winn from Sheffield, South Yorkshire with her own 12 year-old grey mare Adamstown Rohan. They produced their double clear from halfway through the jump off and did so in 44.71 seconds.

Third place was taken by 32 year-old Sally Griffin from Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Staffordshire who partnered her own 13 year-old brown gelding Lucky Blue Eye. This combination crossed the finish line in 45.03 seconds to secure their place not only a spot in the top three but also their place in the Championship Final.

Nine further combinations also went on to secure their qualification for the Dodson & Horrell 0.85cm National Amateur Championship Final.
