CHEPSTOW CSI2*/CSI1*/CSIYH1*

The popular two star meeting at Chepstow had mixed fortunes as far with the showery weather, but the jumping was class.

Fast, decisive and stylish, Nick Benterman landed the top-billed grand prix with his consistent 11 year-old bay gelding Zorland D Volo.

“He’s part of the family and the nicest person,” said Nick, on his Dutch-bred gelding, “He deserved this win.  Now we hope to move up in the sport.”

Course-builder Alan Wade achieved six clears from fifty-five entries – and a further seven jumped clear but incurred a solitary time fault.

“The course was difficult, but Alan did a good job, no-one had a disaster and it needed a careful horse to jump clear,” said Nick.

Kerry Brennan’s effusive 12 year-old bay gelding Wellington M took second.

Charlene Bastone, 20, took fourth in her first grand prix with an impressive double clear on Stacey Webb and Newbridge Sport Horses 9 year-old bay gelding Newbridges Master Brown.

“This horse is very nice and very careful, it’s good a few new combinations are coming through,” said selector Clare Whitaker.  “Chloe Winchester also went well with her mother Gillian's 12 year-old bay mare Avoca Valkyrie [just one first round time fault] and will represent Britain’s senior team in Odense three star alongside [fellow young rider] Emma O’Dwyer.”

Several junior riders were not competing here as they were selected for the imminent Deauville, France, show.

“We had to pre-select Deauville before Chepstow, but the juniors here equipped themselves well,” said Chef d’Equipe Alan Fazakerley.  “I’m looking forward to working with the juniors and children on horses after being involved with the pony Europeans as trainer for many years.”

Selector Clare Whitaker was impressed with those competing here.

“We had new combinations going consistently well in Christie Pritchard on Wendy Hawcroft's 10 year-old dark bay gelding Bolton Gate Ben, Emily Ward with Michael Whitaker & Nick Ward's 11 year-old bay gelding Doobally and Faye Adams on her mother Julie's 11 year-old chestnut gelding Zozo CL – it’s good to see younger ones coming through,” she said.

Kerry Brennan’s flying gallop to the imposing 1.55m joker secured the big tour accumulator by an incredible four seconds on Wellington M.

“I trust him, I aimed to take one stride out to the last, but saw a long shot and took out two,” said Kerry, 2014 gold league winner and Olympia under 23 victor.

Second the previous day, Geoff Luckett was another to dare a risky gallop to the last to take the big tour two phase on Meadow Stud’s 10 year-old bay gelding Constant II.

“He’s very competitive,” said Geoff, who headed a 1.50m class at the recent Lanaken, Belgium show.

Geoff also won with the 9 year-old bay stallion Cash Point, another owned by Meadow Stud, taking the medium tour two phase.

“He’s going back home now to stand at stud,” he said.

Matt Sampson denied Geoff another win, taking the first of the big tour classes on his own 11-year-old bay gelding Eagles Costalot.

“He’s getting more consistent, I’d like to move him up a level and get some bigger shows in,” said Matt.

The impressively scopey 9 year-old grey gelding Chesterfield Z clinched the medium tour grand prix for Bristol based Anna Edwards.

“He’s amazing and so quick across the ground,” said Anna, who is heading to the imminent Magna Racino, Austria, four star show.  “I can’t wait to go there.”

Chloe Winchester and a flying 11 year-old bay gelding Zandokan H owned by Edward Howard annihilated all opposition for a double victory in the medium tour.

“He’s so amazing and still such a winner now I’ve moved him up a level,” said Chloe, Chepstow small grand prix winner here last year.

Welshman Mark Edwards notched up a small tour double victory with Martyn Edwards' 12 year-old bay mare Mammas Tinker.

“She’s a genuine speed horse and a proper winner,” said Mark, who credited his sister Louise’s contribution – “She’s got this mare a lot fitter over Easter when she was home from University.”

Joe Clayton seized the small grand prix on Michael Whitaker's 9 year-old chestnut mare Bonita Z.

“She’s really careful, I could turn tight to the stile and gallop to the last,” he said.

Mark Armstrong claimed a small tour class on Emma Armstrong's 10 year-old bay gelding Balougio III, a consistent winner in Spain.

“He’s very fast and very careful,” said Mark, who took full advantage of his late draw.

Jamie Wingrove claimed the six-year-old in the fast-fading light on the bay mare Juanita Van Der Withoeve.

“She’s as good as anything I’ve ridden, I think she has a great future,” said Jamie, who jointly owns this mare with Enrico Van De Withoeve and Contender bloodlines with Jane Hales.

Max Routledge took the five-year-old grand prix with his own chestnut Firkov Du Rouet, a stallion by Baloubet Du Rouet who is proving popular at stud.

“He is still very green but awesome, too, he’s jumped clear every day here,” said Max.

Sammie-Jo Coffin took the gold tour grand prix from the front with Bill Hole’s Devils Kiss, a seven-year-old chestnut mare by Lupicor bought two years ago.

“She really gained experience in Vilamoura, it has set her up for the year,” said Sammie-Jo.

Andrew Davies claimed the silver tour grand prix aboard Roy and Marlene Edwards’ 16 year-old dark bay mare S Zermie 3.

“She’s a little cracker and so deserves this championship win, she probably wins 20 classes a year, but always seems to narrowly miss out on a championship,” said Andrew

PONIES

Robert Murphy came to the fore in the pony viewing trials, taking the grand prix on Beverley Aitkenhead's 13 year-old dun gelding Newtown Samson.

“He’s simple and easy, I want to thank the owners Beverley and Leonie  for letting me ride him” said Robert, 14, also winner of the speed section with Richard Lunn's 8 year-old bay mare Shannonbay Extra.

“She’s sharp and careful, I enjoy riding her.”

Jodie Hall-McAteer landed the jump-off class with the ever-eager 17 year-old chestnut mare Tixylix owned by Sarah Mendoza, beating Robert into second place on H Jacobsen's 9 year-old brown mare Rainbows Mocha.

“Alan Wade built some good courses, the speed was by far the hardest, and we were aware some riders felt deflated, but on grand prix day they didn’t give up and came back fighting,” said selector Clare Whitaker.  “It was good to see, and we have nine or ten ponies that jumped very well.”

Children on Horses

A high standard in the children on horses – where ten produced double clears in the two round, Nations Cup competition – gave selectors a difficult task.

“All courses were built to maximum and the standard was good, but we as selectors have a difficult job as some riders cross over into ponies, and we have to choose which section – but it’s a good disadvantage,” said Clare Whitaker.

All three of Jack Whitaker’s horses – 13 year-old dark bay mare Lilibet owned by Anne Bedford,9 year-old chestnut mare  Billy Butter owned by Emilie Machon and Michael Whitaker's 14 year-old bay mare Native De Vesquerie were equal first in the Nations Cup rounds, and Native De Vesquerie also headed the grand prix.

“She has plenty of scope and is very careful,” said Jack.

Norfolk based India Bussey finished a close grand prix second with Tamsin Conyers 13 year-old bay mare Valerie B and also won the speed class with Josephine Gates'  13 year-old chestnut gelding Westwinds Ego.

“Ego is scopey but unique, I have to be quiet as he’s sharp,” said India, 14.
