Brits finish 2nd in CSIO3* Nations Cup, Denmark

It was a hard Nations Cup competition in Uggerhalne, Denmark this afternoon that saw Great Britain, who compete under the title sponsor banner of Team NAF, finish eventual 2nd after two solid rounds of jumping.

The team of four consisted of Jessie Drea from Haywards Heath, West Sussex with Mullaghdrin Touch The Stars, a 13 year-old bay stallion owned by both herself and Lynne Humphries.  Julie Andrews from Preston, Lancashire with Ayrton IV, a 13 year-old bay gelding owned by Eva Bjorkman.  Harry Charles from Alton, Hampshire with the 9 year-old grey gelding Sieco, owned by Peter Charles MBE and Anna Power from Clevedon, North Somerset with her own 12 year-old bay gelding Blazer B

World Class Performance Manager, Di Lampard, talked through the competition after the presentation by saying “It was a really tough Nations Cup competition today.  The conditions were hot, the ground was changeable and the course was big.  It was a WEG qualifier  and the course definitely asked the right questions as a result.

“Jessie took the role of pathfinder.  She had three down in the first round but came back in the second a lot stronger and was unfortunate to get caught out at the last two elements of the combination.  The rustic combination was definitely the obstacle that took its toll in the competition and Jessie was one of those caught out at it.

“Julie rode fantastically and she was the star of the team today. She delivered two absolutely brilliant clears and she rode her heart out.  Ayrton also couldn’t have been more careful and they looked brilliant together.  I couldn’t be happier with their performance and when you consider there was only one other double clear in the entire competition it really highlights the calibre of their performance this afternoon.

“Harry, who was making his debut on a senior nations cup competition, had some bad luck.  Sieco had a small bleed from the nose in the first round, so we naturally decided to withdraw him from the second.  It seemed to happen towards the latter end of the course which is where he understandably accumulated his 12 penalties.

“Last to go Anna  jumped a great first round clear in her role of anchor rider.  She was definitely unlucky not to return with another clear in the second when a touch of the back bar of an oxer, going into the double, saw them pick up 4 penalties.

“We have a had a great start to the Nations Cup season with a win in Wellington, a 3rd in Linz and then second here today. The spirit and determination amongst all the team riders so far this season, has been fantastic and to see the owners enjoy the success makes it all the more worthwhile.  We are all looking forward to St Gallen next month, the next competition which is our first points scoring competition.

It was Germany who took the title on a total of 20 penalties, just one fence ahead of Great Britain.  With Belgium finishing on 28 penalties.
