BRITISH YOUNG HORSE SHOWJUMPING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015

Quality and Talent was in abundance at Addington Manor Equestrian Centre, Addington, Buckinghamshire over four days of jumping.

“Entries are up this year, the best we’ve ever had,” declared show director Tim Price on this increasingly popular showcase for Britain’s young horses.

Good prize-money was topped by generous bonus prizes on offer to horses jumping clear rounds throughout the show.  The £4,000 offered to each age section – four, five, six and seven-year-olds – saw riders weigh up their options when going against the clock, some opting for steady clears to ensure a share of the money.

Laura Renwick from Maldon, Essex has a new and up-and-coming star in her husband John’s MHS Washington, a seven-year-old with scope, flair and a great attitude.  The Irish-bred mare by OBOS Quality 004 and out of a Cavalier Royale mare headed the seven-year-old title with six seconds to spare.  Consistent clear rounds throughout the show also earned a half share of the bonus, and claimed a finalist in the seven-year-old section of the talentseekers final at Horse of the Year Show.  A good day at the office!

“He’s an athlete and makes my job easy,” said Laura, who also won the first section of the mares and stallions 1.40m with John and Marian Renwick’s 14 year-old bay mare Beluga II.

Emma Stoker from Consett, County Durham, headed the second section with Robert Young’s 10 year-old bay mare Townhead Tallulah V – winner of the International Stairway at the Great Yorkshire show.

“She’s been in the top three at the last five shows, every one a double clear, she is so consistent and competitive now,” said Emma.

Beluga II and Townhead Tallulah V earned a further £500 as top mares in their classes, while the top stallion prize in both was awarded to Henk Minderman’s  15 year-old chestnut stallion Baloubet Junior Z, ridden by Nottinghamshire based Louise Saywell.

“He’s loving it, his ears are pricked and he’s enjoying life,” said Louise on the big chestnut by Baloubet Du Rouet, a former top ride of the USA’s Christine McCrea.

Louise was also second in the seven-year-old on Billy Twomey’s big, scopey Dassler, earning a talentseekers place in the seven-year-old section and taking the other £2,000 bonus half share.

The Billy Stud, run by Donal Barnwell with William and Pippa Funnell, were rewarded with the British bred Six-Year-Old championship in the form of Billy Chatter a bay gelding ridden by Lucy Bunn.

“He loves to play and buck, but he’s very careful and will always try over a fence, typically like his sire,” said Lucy on the gelding by William Funnell’s top 5* International stallion Billy Congo.

Anthony Condon from Whitchurch, Shropshire won the six-year-old non British Bred section with John and Pat Hales’ talented  grey mare Zira II – winner of last year’s five-year-old.

“It was a tough course, but she’s so careful, has a great attitude and keeps on improving,” said Anthony on the Zurich daughter.

Three came forward to share the £4,000 clear round bonus, Zira II , Julian Mincher on Samantha Middleton’s  6 year-old bay gelding Eindhoven G H and Manfred Von Allworden’s 6 year-old dark brown stallion Clyde VA ridden by Shane Breen, all from the non British-bred section.

Some horses are winners from day one.  Helen and Mark Wells and Georgia Reynolds’ home-bred bay mare Heartstring – ably piloted by Jamie Wingrove from Leamington Spa, Warwickshire – has already claimed the Weston Lawns and British Showjumping National Championships five-year-old titles.  And they added a third championship to their tally, taking the British-bred five-year-old championship.

“She’s a good one and ticks all the boxes – scopey, careful and easy to train,” said Jamie on the mare by Cicero Z Van Paemel with Heartbreaker on the mother line.  “This was the biggest track she’s jumped, but nothing fazes her, she’s so level-headed.”

Sammie Coffin from  St. Austell Cornwall landed the non British-bred five-year-old championship with Sally Jobson-Scott’s bay mare Follyfoot Dolce Vita DBZ, a Diamant De Semilly daughter purchased as a foal.

“She is amazingly scopey,” said Sammie, who acquired the ride on this mare 12 months ago and jumped on the Vilamoura tour at the beginning of this year – “Jumping in Portugal really opens their eyes and the experience sets them up for the rest of the year.”

Only one five-year-old jumped clear every day to claim the bonus, a delighted Rachael Connor from Rossendale,  Lancashire picking up an eye-watering £4,000 on the chestnut gelding, Zaha, a son of Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve bought as a lightly backed three-year-old from Sport Horse Continental.

“He’s a big horse so I ride him in a Pelham just to help me, but he’s so level-headed he’s easy,” said Rachael.

An impressive set of four year-olds jumped double clear to share equal first and claim the clear round bonus prizes, ten from the British-bred section joining eight non British-bred.
