ALEXANDERS HORSEBOXES BRITISH SHOWJUMPING SCOPE FESTIVAL - WEDNESDAY

The sun shone brightly on the fourth day of the Alexanders Horseboxes British Showjumping Scope Festival, and another set of brand new Champions celebrated with glorious, victorious laps of honour.

Laura Renwick took the Montse Benitez Foundation Seven Year-Old title with Heliodor Hybris. “He is one for the future, he has a great attitude and wants to jump,” said Laura, who is in the Senior Foxhunter Final at the Horse of the Year Show this time with the Diamant De Semilly gelding. It is the fourth time Laura has won this title. Her previous winners are Limelight De Breve (2006), Beluga (2008) and Parvati De Breve (2010).

Sam Reddrop effortlessly moved Cool Clarimo up a gear to take the Equiport National Five Year-Old title. The grey by Clarimo owned by Angela Webb was bought as a just broken 3 year-old from Donny and Dawn Janciauskas.

“We aimed him for this class, and he’s done everything we’ve asked,” said Sam, who is based at Foxhill Sports Horses in Northamptonshire.

Quality and scope were in endless supply in the Horsepower Motor Centre Four Year-Old championship, judged on style and performance by Peter Charles, Pam Dunning and Tracey Newman. And the three judges were unanimous in their decision for Quimari W – ably shown by Spencer Roe – whose will next be riding at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France.

The impressive stallion by Quidam B Z has been produced by Andrew Saywell in British Novice and Senior Newcomers classes and showed flair, consistency and power under Spencer’s guidance. “He has all the ingredients to make a top horse,” said Tracey Newman.

Kieran Leonard commandingly seized the Independent Asset Management 1.25m title with Benny. He followed trainer John Steels’ instructions to the letter, knocking more than a sec from Emma-Jo Slater’s time on Cosmic Neo. The 8 year-old Benny was purchased three years ago.

“He’s very laidback but easy to ride, but he lights up in the ring,” said Leicestershire based Kieran.

It’s all in the breeding. Will Edwards – son of Sydney 2000 Olympian Carl Edwards and Amanda (nee Lanni) – claimed victory in the Graham Heath Construction National Under 16 title by an amazing six seconds with the homebred R Candy. This 10-year-old by Heartbreaker is out of the mare Cady Tuft, a daughter of Lloyd and was Will’s European Children on Horses ride in Arezzo earlier this year.

Emily Ward was in flying form to lift the top two places in the Lunn Family Jubilee Open Pony Championship with King Mac and Wizard VIII. The hotly contended jump-off had spectators on their feet shouting encouragement.

Jodie Hall-McAteer had set a sizzling target on The Little Squire that looked unbeatable, but Emily had other ideas.  She cut corners tighter and took a breath-taking stride out to the final oxer on Wizard, then beat her own time with her Pony European ride King Mac.

A final, flying round from Will Andrews on Sparkling Mount Royal secured the Phone Art Stepping Stones 128cm Championship and his biggest win. Will, 11, was assisted with his jump-off track by mum Julie – 2013 Scope ladies champion. “Mum told me to have fun,” said Will, who is half the age of his 22-year-old schoolmistress pony, who came recommended by Mandy Hall after spotting the mare in Ireland. “She’s fast and loves the prize-giving.”

Harriet Austin proved the fastest in the Phone Art Stepping Stones 138cm championship on Merlens Theodora.
