ALEXANDERS HORSEBOXES BRITISH SHOWJUMPING SCOPE FESTIVAL - THURSDAY

Early starts and late nights were made worthwhile for a select few as they were crowned champions.

Maestro John Whitaker conjured up a class jump-off round to take the Halsall Electrical National Gents title. Smooth but lightning quick turns on Old Lodge’s German 10-year-old Lord of Arabia secured victory, relegating Phillip Miller and Caritiar Z by just 0.01 sec.

“Phillip was fast enough and difficult to beat, but every turn came off, and somewhere I squeezed one hundredth of a second,” said John.

Lauren Edwards was declared Westcoast Express National Ladies champion with Nigel Marmont’s nine-year-old Archie Bunker.

“He’s quite sharp so the jump-off track suited us, I could keep him moving,” said Lauren, stable jockey for Shrewsbury based Nigel since April. “Nigel has had Archie for five years, he’s the family favourite.”

European Junior Team Gold medallist Millie Allen added yet another title to her long tally with the Autostop National Under 18 championship with Senator Cantino II. Millie, 16, got the ride on the Canturo sired 12-year-old at the end of March to prepare for the European Championships. “He’s really big and very scopey with a huge stride, but he’s adjustable and careful,” she said.

Carmen Edwards was not to be outdone by younger brother Will, newly crowned under 16 champion on R Candy just 24 hours earlier. He claimed his own championship with the HorseSolarium.co.uk Grade C on Bow House Secret.

“She’s my horse of a lifetime, she’s taught me everything,” said Carmen, 17, on the 10-year-old by Charriol bred by his grandfather Charlie Edwards. Carmen naturally relied on the jump-off track advice from his father Carl – Sydney 2000 Olympian.

Emma Sargeant’s Fools Business claimed the Smarter Training Group National 1.15m title for the second consecutive year – but this year the home-bred 13-year-old was ridden by Emma’s sister Katie. The sisters share the ride, but as Emma’s is expecting her second child in September, Katie has taken over this summer to great success.  The current national winter amateur titleholders have also qualified for Horse of the Year Show after winning the Silver League Semi-Final at Bishop Burton. “This class was made for him,” said Katie.

James Rosewell used his final draw to take the Tacklockers.com 1m Novice title with Emily Dewey’s Rhyne Clover sired Clover Secrets.

“He’s keen and loves to jump,” said Emily, who bought this Irish-bred 9 year-old in a lot of six in Belgium in May.

Megan Taylor found all the shortcuts to take the Graham Heath Construction National Primary 138cm Championship with the seasoned 22-year-old Ballyclough Brisco.

Rachel Proudley, second in the Stepping Stones a day earlier, brought Painted Lady IV into the top spot of the Graham Heath Construction National Primary 128cm to receive a coveted sash and rug.

Jessica Hewitt topped the Peace Love World Pony Adventurer on Cluedo III, a Dutch-bred 12-year-old she has ridden since May.
