Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Qualifier at the Westmorland County Show

Thursday 20 September 2012

Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Qualifier at the Westmorland County Show

The last of the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C qualifying competitions was held last week (Thursday 13th September 2012) at Westmorland County Show in Cumbria. The class attracted 21 eligible starting combinations, all of whom were hoping to claim the last chance to gain their direct qualification into the Championship Final.

The Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C qualifier saw riders drive from all over the country with the aim of qualifying for the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship, which will be held at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) on Sunday 7th October 2012.

From the total number of starters, only one combination achieved a clear in the first round meaning that they were the overall winners of the class, securing them a place in the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship Final. The superb clear was produced by 34-year-old Paul Barker from Northallerton, North Yorkshire and he achieved his qualification on board Townhead Zanzibar VIII, an eight-year-old liver chestnut gelding owned by Robert Young. The combination produced their clear in a time of 68.00 seconds to take home their Championship Final place.

With two Championship Final places still up for grabs, the allocation then came down to the fastest four fault qualifiers. Second place was secured by 26-year-old Kelly Connor from Lochgelly, Fife and she rode her own nine-year-old chestnut gelding, Why Me II. The combination had an unfortunate pole at fence eight, but their time of 65.62 seconds was enough to ensure that they finished in the top three and ensure that they had booked a spot in the Speedi-Beet HOYS Grade C Championship Final.

The combination in third place took the last direct qualifying place and this spot was filled by 29-year-old Laura Stephenson from Keighley, West Yorkshire. Laura rode his own ten-year-old grey gelding, Catherston Connor, owned by David Stephenson. This combination had gone clear all the way up until the final fence, but a rolled pole and a time of 65.76 seconds meant a third place finish. However, the time was still enough to ensure that the combination booked their place in the Championship Final.
