There’s never been a better chance to experience European Championship equestrian competition on your very own doorstep! The last European Championship for Dressage held in the UK was back in 2003, and for Show Jumping it was a whole 10 years ago at Hickstead. In just over 11 days, for the first time ever, both dressage and show jumping will begin their path towards the esteemed European Championship title at Windsor Castle – and this European Championship is worth waiting for!

Meredith Micheals-Beerbaum, the reigning European Individual Jumping Champion, will be defending her title with her ‘Jumping machine’ Shutterfly. Rarely seen competing in the UK, Meredith is part of a strong nominated team for Germany, who are also the Team European Championship title.

Team GBR, who announced their Jumping team selections earlier this week, are ready for a fight to the finish, with Geoff Billington, Peter Charles, Ben Maher and Robert Smith selected. All the team members expressed their delight at being given the chance to compete at a European Championships on home turf, and are looking forward to some Great British support at the event!

Contenders for the Dressage ‘Crown’ include a host of top names, including Kyra Kyrklund (FIN), Adelinde Cornelissen (NED) and Anky Van Grunsven (NED), who will have her eyes set on the title after winning a silver medal in 2007. The British Team are odds on to be in the placings, with in-form riders Laura Bechtolsheimer, Emma Hindle and Carl Hester selected.

Eventing Grand Prix at Windsor!
Show Jumping and Dressage are not the only things on offer at these Championships. During the Alltech World Equestrian Games Gala evening on Friday, 28th August, the cream of British eventing riders such as Pippa Funnell, Zara Phillips and Mary King will be taking part in a unique eventing Grand Prix. It will be the first time ever that such a competition has taken place at Windsor. In addition, inspiration towards 2010 will come from a showcase of the eight equestrian disciplines competing at the World Equestrian games in Kentucky, including vaulting, reining, para dressage, endurance and a special arena carriage driving competition accompanied by fireworks!

The evening will be topped off with the H&M Puissance, where invited riders such as Laura Kraut and John, Robert, Ellen and William Whitaker are all competing. It is sure to be a night to remember – don’t miss out on being there to experience it first hand!
