World No.1 Scott Brash narrowly misses out winning the $450k Longines Los Angeles Masters Grand Prix

Monday 05 October 2015

It was a 2nd place finish for World No.1 rider Scott Brash with Hello M’Lady, owned by Lady Kirkham and Lady Harris, last night in the Longines Los Angeles Masters Grand Prix with it’s $450,000 prize purse.

German rider Marco Kutscher took the eventual honours aboard Van Gogh after an incredibly hard fought jump off.   The field was a particularly strong one with all thirty six starters firmly setting their eyes on the generous prize fund on offer.  It was seven that jumped clear in the first round and who were then invited back for the jump off.

In the enviable position of being last to go, Marco  had certainlyseen the gauntlet laid down by Kent Farrington, Steve Guerdat and Scott Brash; all of whom had jumped another clear.   It was Scott and Hello M’Lady who had set the hardest task for them to beat with their clear in a time of 37.93 seconds. Kent sat hot on their heels in a time of 38.08 with Steve Guerdat delivering the slowest of the clears at that point.

For Marco, his jump off round went exactly as he had hoped, seeing him jump clear within a faster time of 37.05 seconds.  Talking afterwards Scott commented “I’m delighted with my horse, I’m just annoyed with myself that I didn’t do a smoother round.  Marco’s horse went so well it would have been an absolute joy to watch really if you weren’t perhaps sitting in the position I was”.

John Whitaker and the British Bred stallion Argento were unlucky to have a fence down in the first round.  Having won the Masters Grand Slam in Hong Kong earlier in the year they would have stood to win a €250k bonus.  However, it was an 11th place finish for them as the second fastest 4 faulter in round one.  Ben Maher and the talented 9 year-old Boomerang also incurred 4 faults in the first round to finish further down the line.
