TEAM FAIRFAX JUNIORS LEAD THE WAY IN AREZZO

Friday 25 July 2014

The Children, Junior and Young Rider European Championships are now well underway in Arezzo, Italy despite the fact that competition had to be abandoned yesterday as a result of the torrential rain that flooded the arena, stabling and surrounding areas during the afternoon.

Yesterday should have seen the first round of the Team competition for all three age groups, however it was only the Young Riders and two thirds of the Children that managed to get through their competition before a freak storm hit the area flooding the venue almost instantly. With the sun shining today and the programme having been rescheduled the Juniors contested their first round today and the Children completed their first round. Both teams will continue into the second rounds tomorrow.

The two days have seen mixed fortunes for the GB riders competing under the Team Fairfax banner. The Young Riders as a Team didn’t get off to the best start yesterday finishing on a total of 34 penalties and in 13th position. Despite an incredibly impressive performance by Emma O’Dwyer and HHS Nektarina B who fiinished with just one time penalty having jumped clear but stopping the clock outside the time it just wasn’t to be for the team. Chloe Winchester and Avoca Valkyrie finished on 8 penalties, whilst 25 penalties were accrued by Dominic Webb and Whin Whin III after the rounding on the horse's bit broke, requiring Dominic to reattach it. Chloe Aston had to delay her entry into the arena when Kolibri Classic had to have a shoe put back on having lost one just after he had been warmed up. An uncharacteristic elimination towards the latter end of the course caused concern with him also looking a bit footsore and not being able to come forward for the second round this morning.

With the Young Riders not making the final ten to come forward for the Team Final today, they continued forward as Individuals hoping to gain points to push them into contention for an Individual medal which will get decided on Sunday. It is Emma O’Dwyer who is the the best of the Brits and looks to be a strong contender for Sunday.

The Children’s team finished in 5th place today. Scarlett Charles had to withdraw from competition yesterday due to Cherona Z incurring a minor injury. Robert Murphy and Del Fuego put in a tremendous performance to produce one of the very few clears of the entire competition. Jodie Hall McAteer and Vichy also put in a foot perfect clear, but they accrued a single time penalty for finishing just outside the time allowed. Will Edwards and R Candy just missed out on a clear round when they rolled a pole to incur 4 penalties.

Team Fairfax Juniors are riding high and keeping the opposition on their toes. After the first round of the Team competition they are in joint 1st position alongside The Netherlands. Clear rounds achieved by Jake Saywell and Grand Cru Van Paemel as well as Jessica Mendoza and Spirit T put the team in an incredibly strong position. Millie Allen and Cantino finished on an uncharacteristic 4 penalties when they lowered a fence. Christie Pritchard and Waldemar became the dropscore for the team with their 16 penalty finish. The team medals will be decided tomorrow and it looks set to be an extremely close battle amongst the nations topping the table with Ireland just one point behind GB and the Netherlands.

Jessica Mendoza sits in joint 1st position on the Junior League table on zero penalties as does Jake Saywell in respect of the Individual medals on offer.

Competition resumes tomorrow at 7.00am BST and for more information on the show and live results please visit www.arezzoequestrian.com.
