Step up to Gold 2017/2018 Applications

The Step up to Gold programme is now accepting applications for 2017/2018 and the programme has been opened up to riders aged 16-30 years old.

The programme, in its fourth year, will have two aims; it will continue to support riders working towards establishing themselves at 1.40m level and will also support riders that are aiming to be selected onto the BEF Excel and World Class Programmes. This change means that the Step up to Gold programme will give riders support to help them gain the results needed to be eligible for further programmes at the point of next applications.

The programme will consist of:

  • National and regional training days with Matt Lanni and a regional coach
  • Strength and Condition coaches working individually with riders to develop a training programme
  • Sport Science support including horse physio, rider sports therapy, saddle experts, veterinary talks, anti-doping talks and travelling abroad workshops
  • Coach and organisational support at a show abroad and an International show in the UK
  • Funding will cover training fees, sport science support, strength and condition coaches and some other associated costs such as entry fees and stabling

There will be four training and selection days held in October (North, South, East and West), where those who fulfil the criteria are welcome to come along for the session shown on the invitation they will receive from us, once their application form has been confirmed. From these sessions 8 riders will be selected to join the final year long programme. Please note there will be a one-off fee of £35 to attend the initial training and selection day after which the programme will be majority funded by Sport England.

This is a great opportunity for members to gain the training and support needed to step up the levels.

Eligibility criteria:

If you have applied before you can apply again.

  • Aged 16-30
  • Not to have been part of Excel or World Class funded programmes previously
  • A minimum criteria of results at 1.25/1.30m
  • Not to be currently involved in any other government funded training programme e.g. AASE
  • Not to have jumped on any Young Rider or Senior British teams.
  • Reside in England
  • Current British Showjumping member

All sport funding is limited, selected riders are very fortunate to be given it, therefore all riders must fully commit to the programme and endeavour to be present at all training and show dates otherwise they are denying this chance for someone else.

The National training days for the programme will be held during:

  • November 2017
  • March 2018
  • May 2018 (International Show TBC)
  • June 2018
  • July 2018 (UK International Show)

Training and Selection days:

North: Bishop Burton College Wednesday 11th October 2016

West: Rodbaston Equestrian Thursday 12th October 2016

East: Keysoe, The College Equestrian Centre Friday 13th October 2016

South: Crofton Manor Equestrian Thursday 19th October 2016
