PLEVIN BRITISH SHOWJUMPING SCOPE FESTIVAL - FRIDAY ROUND UP

Friday 31 August 2012

Thrills, spills and glory filled the penultimate day of this year’s British Showjumping Scope Festival.

British-based Irishman Richard Howley hit the ground running at his first visit to the week-long Festival here, and commandingly claimed two championships. He came to the fore in the George Babes young riders B and C championship on Michael Whitaker’s seven-year-old Stakkato De Fee.

And then he landed the Thermohomes Europe 1.30m title aboard Elite K in a hot, exciting and seriously fast class. “I’m having a good day” said Richard, who had also taken first and third in the grand prix qualifier with Camiro De Haar Z and Emilia Van Het Scheefkasteel.

An early round by Laura Robinson with the Irish-bred Cree Cruiser landed the Mitchell Moor Equestrian national under 18 championship in a 15-strong jump-off. Jake Saywell was some two sec behind for second with Cornelius 27.

Rachel Walker headed a five horse decider to take the Sport horse Classic Blue Riband title on the seven-year-old It’s Delux.“She’s super consistent and always tries” said Cumbrian-based Rachel, who works part-time for her farmer father – “Getting time off for shows is no problem!”

Scotland’s Graham Babes claimed the Jayne Pownall national 138cm final on Alfie III.
In an emotional presentation, he received a trophy donated by Darby and Taylor Ward’s family in memory of their trainer Harvey Kaye, who died in August from cancer.

Connie Warde-Aldam became The Old School Bramburgh national 128cm titleholder with a decisively fast round on Dykebeck Wild Hazelnut. Jodie Hall-McAteer chased hard but come only come within a sec on My Little Sweetheart for second.

The Independent Asset Management pony progressive novice finished in a dead heat as Christopher Whinnett on Ballyvellon Smooth Move equalled Jared Lunn’s time on Ballybaloo. They were the only two clears recorded, but Essex-based Jared was on form.
He’d already declared pony adventurer champion with new ride Lahinch Katie, and on this occasion, he brought Katie into third, too.

Faye Adams followed up Thursday’s 138cm primary win on Dycott Masterman with the Mandy Hall pony 1.15m members cup on Cisco Bay II.
