Lisbon CSI3* Furusiyya Nations Cup Round-Up

Friday 29 May 2015

The British Team contesting the CSI 3* Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping leg at Lisbon, Portugal Friday 29th May had mixed fortunes earlier today.

The 12-fence track designed by Brazil’s Guilherme Jorge jumped very differently for many of the horse-and-rider combinations over the two rounds. One of the most surprising elements of the competition was the fact that so many of those who went well first time out really struggled at their second attempt. The two-hour interval between the first round in daylight, and the second under lights, created a completely different environment. As Roquet Puignero explained afterwards, “a lot of horses were very spooky about the lights in the second round, and there was a lot more tension for the riders at that stage.”

First Round
Pathfinder rider Louise Saywell from Retford, Nottinghamshire with Sarah Hancox and Graham Lovegrove’s 14 year-old chestnut stallion Mr Darcy picked up four penalties in the first round. Two clears were then provided by Kerry Brennan, who was making her debut on a senior team, from Chesterfield with Liane Smith’s 12 year-old bay gelding Wellington M and Julie Andrews from Preston with Eva Bjorkman’s 10 year-old bay gelding Ayrton IV. Anchor for the team Emma O’Dwyer from Gloucestershire with Joanne O’Dwyer’s 9 year-old bay gelding  HHS Figero became the drop score after they were eliminated at the water.

At the half way stage, Britain sat in equal second with the USA and Ireland with four faults apiece with Spain just in front with 0 penalties.

Second Round
With the light changing, only two fences were raised going into the second round. Britain’s luck then changed with all of the riders picking up penalties across the course

Louise and Mr Darcy picked up 12 jumping penalties as well as one time fault, resulting in her becoming the drop score.  Kerry and Wellington M finished on 8 penalties whilst Julie and Ayrton IV also toppled a fence to finish on 4 penalties.  Emma and HHS Figero saw much improvement in the second round picking up 9 penalties in total.

The second round saw GB disappointingly slide down the rankings to finish in 7th place over all with Spain picking up the honours and home team Portugal taking 2nd place whilst France took 3rd position.
