Kelly Taylor Claims Victory in the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Second Round at Weston Lawns

Eighteen year-old Kelly Taylor from Daventry, Northamptonshire claimed victory in the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Second Round on board Halltown Lucy at Weston Lawns, registering her place in the Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show at the NEC, Birmingham in October.

A huge one hundred and four starters initially tackled the thirteen-fence track, but course-designer Steve Williams skilfully reduced this to twenty-four for round two with related distance questions. He hadn’t ordered the accompanying rumbling thunder, and the judges sensibly advised a delay before round two’s final rider Ryan Page started his round when the heavy storm broke.

Only seven reached the jump-off over a now substantial track with Kelly’s penultimate round on Abbie Taylor's 7 year-old bay mare Halltown Lucy taking the spoils by 2.88 seconds.

Kelly makes a welcome return to HOYS. “I last jumped there in ponies three years ago, it’s fantastic, I can’t believe I won it,” she said.

Irishman Paul Kennedy, who has been based in Cheshire with Sharon and Dave Quigley for the past nine months, took the second qualifying ticket on Destiny Second Life Z, a 6 year-old bay mare by Diamant De Semilly.“It was a big course and very competitive, I can’t thank Dave and Sharon enough for letting me ride such a quality horse,” said Paul, who will make his HOYS debut in October.
