Bury Farm Large Pony Premier - Round Up

Monday 13 March 2017

The final 148cm Pony Premier of the season drew pony riders far and wide to Bury Farm in hope of gaining the coveted qualifying places to Hickstead and the British Masters.

Hannah Barker stepped up magnificently to top level JA classes on Lynn Barker’s Ammanvalley Santino, taking victory in Saturday’s Charles Britton Equestrian Construction Winter JA Classic Qualifier in her very first attempt in this class.

Twenty-four hopefuls contended the first round with eight making their way into round two with initial clears.  But the raised and shortened track took its toll, and only two survived to go forward to the jump-off.  Qualification was assured, but it was still nerve-wracking for the inexperienced Hannah at this level.  Nonetheless, she guided the Welsh-bred 13-year-old Santino into the top spot with one single mistake, just four faults marring their round.

Molly Davies hit two fences on Melanie Davies’ Cuffesgrange For Sure, but the hard work had been done and she claimed the second qualifying place.

Courtney Young was the fastest of the four-faulters in round two for third on Fostymana VH Trichelhof.

Fraser Reed headed the final Charles Britton Equestrian Construction Winter JA Classic Qualifier of the season on Sunday with three perfect, stylish rounds on Barie Truelove’s Quilitymaes Z.

Only five of the twenty starters gained round one clears with one lost along the way in round two to provide four for the final jump-off.  And super-cool Fraser was the sole rider to stay penalty-free on the 16-year-old mare Quilitymaes to commandeer the top spot.

Just four faults marred Oliver Fletcher’s round on Graham Fletcher’s The Bobster, a HOYS 2016 Foxhunter finalist, but it was sufficient for second place.  Faye Sutton, also on four faults, was a fraction behind – just 0.28 seconds – for third on Robe Ruadh and Isabelle Ryder guided Woodfield Five Star into fourth place.

Amelie Bush dominated Saturday’s winter JC, claiming two Hickstead qualifying places.

Fifty-five initially started in this qualifier, with thirteen posting initial clears and just one dropping out of contention in round two for a twelve pony decider.  But only two managed to jump clear again in a tense, high-octane jump-off, Amelie gaining victory on Ghislaine Macdonnell’s Lady Springfield, an 11-year-old mare she has ridden for just three weeks.

Claudia Moore produced the only other jump-off clear for second and a coveted Royal International Horse Show ticket on Katrina Moore’s 10-year-old Delflip.

And Amelie brought Robin Hood Lad into third as the fastest of the four-faulters to claim the third qualifying position.

Oliver Tuff celebrated on Sunday with victory in the Winter JC to claim coveted Hickstead qualification on his father Justin Tuff’s 7-year-old mare Oakwood Daisy.

Seventeen of forty-seven starters jumped clear in round one, but round two proved much more difficult, and only four reached the final round to chase after the two Hickstead tickets on offer.  And they were filled by the only two treble clears, Oliver taking the win on Oakwood Daisy, a mare Oliver has produced for the last 14 months, by 2.20 seconds.

Lily Freeman-Attwood claimed second and the final Winter JC ticket on Emily Freeman-Attwood’s Capability Brown, an Irish-bred six-year-old gelding she acquired last August.

Sandy McLean laid claim to the Blue Chip Pro Sparkle JC/JA with Marjory McNaughton’s 10-year-old Tobar King by just 0.09 of a second.

Jodie Burchmore-Eames jumped into second place on Jack Eames’ Irish-bred 11-year-old Ron Burgundy with Perdita Digby in third on Sophie Digby’s 12-year-old mare Kayleighs Star and Kate Baxter on the 16-year-old gelding Bonds Glen in fourth.

Daisy McKinlay topped the British Showjumping 148cm Special with Michael McKinlay’s Spot The Go Jo, a 10-year-old Appaloosa mare.  The pair claimed the win by a commanding 2.87 seconds in the 20-strong class.

Ella Garlick eased Julie Manfield’s 17-year-old gelding Wild At Heart T into second with Harry Wood on the Irish 17-year-old gelding Cross Word taking third.

Hannah Barker took fourth here on new ride Carlow Girl, an Irish 11-year-old mare and also winner of Saturday’s Foxhunter.
