Sunday 09 September 2012
The British quartet comprising Olympic Gold Medallist Scott Brash, Tina Fletcher, Robert Whitaker and Michael Whitaker, finished in fourth place in the $300,000 BMO Nations Cup at Spruce Meadows, Canada yesterday.
In the first round, Scott riding his father Stanley Brash’s 13 year-old black gelding Intertoy Z lowered just one fence to finish with 4 faults. Next to go was Tina Fletcher riding Lady Kirkham and Lady Harris’ 11 year-old bay mare Ursula XII who chalked up a foot perfect clear round. They were followed by Robert Whitaker riding Mandy Hall and Clare Whitaker’s 11 year-old bay stallion USA Today, who also lowered a single fence and incurred 2 time penalties to cross the finishing line on a total of 6 faults. Anchorman Michael Whitaker rode his own 10 year-old chestnut gelding Viking V, who also knocked down one fence and acquired a single time penalty to finish on a total of 5 faults.
The second round saw Scott and Intertoy Z fall foul to two fences to finish with 8, with Tina and Ursula XII and Robert and USA Today emulating Michael’s first round score to both finish with 5. Michael and Viking V unfortunately retired. Record crowds topping over 80,000 spectators saw the German Team victorious with Ireland in second and The Netherlands in third.
