British Showjumping Team Cavalor win Furusiyya Nations Cup in Rome!

Emotions ran high in Rome today when British Showjumping’s Team Cavalor won the CSIO 5* Furusiyya Nations Cup this afternoon.  This made it a  back-to-back win in Rome as they had entered the competition as the defending champions having won last year.

Taking the lead from the start, the team fought hard to hold onto the headway they had made making it an incredible competition to watch.  Competition was fierce andit wasn’t until John Whitaker, as the very final rider, had come through the finish line that GB were declared as the winners.

To win in Rome was a pivotal victory as it was the second competition of the series where GB were competing for their share of the league points being allocated.  To pick up maximum points puts Team Cavalor in a solid position going forward in terms of assuring themselves in the top tier of the series for next year making the victory all the more important.

Ben Maher  from Bishops Stortford was the first of the team of four to come forward with the 13 year-old stallion Tic Tac owned by Jane Forbes Clark.  Tic Tac, who was making his debut on a team couldn’t have looked better when he delivered a clear in the first round.  The second round saw two fences touched and 8 penalties accrued for them to become the drop score, however Tic Tac definitely proved himself as an incredible talent and a horse that looks set to become a great team horse and one that will only get better as he gains more experience.

Jess Mendoza who is based in The Netherlands with Spirit T, a 15 year-old brown mare owned by Sarah Mendoza posted a great clear in the first round.   Looking set to deliver another in round 2 it was the top pole over a water tray that rolled at what looked to be the slightest touch that meant 4 penalties were accrued.  The combination looked as solid as they did last year when they delivered great performances for GB, the most notable of which was when they played a pivotal role in the team that secured Rio qualification at the European Championships in Aachen last summer.

Michael Whitaker from Whatton, Nottinghamshire with the 11 year-old grey stallion Cassionato which is owned by Beverley Widdowson finished on a 9 penalty score in the first round with two down and a time penalty. Hoewever their second round saw this impressively big jumping horse come into his own when he jumped a stunning clear within the time allowed to post a faultless round.

John Whitaker from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire with Team Harmony’s bay mare Ornellaia was just pure genius.   In the role of anchor, a role that John absolutely thrives in, he gave this scopey mare everything he could to see her jump clear within the time allowed in the first round.  Ornellaia, who was also making her debut on a team, looked like she was an old-hand in the way she just took everything in her stride.   As they entered the arena for the second time with everything riding on their shoulders  they looked as relaxed and fresh as they had in the first.   With everyone in the packed grandstands riding the course alongside them, they were met with a standing ovation and a roar of appreciation from the crown when they broke the finish line clear.    Barely able to contain his emotion at  the realisation that their performance had assured  GB of the win,  John threw both arms in the air in delight drawing a roar of approval and appreciation from the crowd alongside the arena.

Talking afterwards an ecstatic Di Lampard, World Class Performance Manager for Showjumping said “I just have the most fantastic squad of riders. They have all done their bit today, they have been brilliant and to have John on the team and for him to deliver what he did at the end is amazing.  I feel incredibly lucky “.

France and the United States took joint second place  with 12 penalties whilst the United States whilst Germany took 4th on 14 points.

The Nations Cup competition takes place Friday 27th May at 15:45 hrs local time and the Grand Prix on Sunday 29 May 2016 at 15:00 hrs  local time.   The Chef d’Equipe accompanying World Class Performance Manager for Showjumping, Di Lampard.
