Big Star Competition Update
Monday 05 December 2016
Rio 2016 Individual Gold medal winning stallion Big Star, owned by Gary & Beverley Widdowson and ridden by Nick Skelton OBE, will sadly not be competing at the forthcoming CSI 5* Geneva or Olympia the London International Horse Show.
Talking to British Showjumping Nick explained “He has twisted a joint, it’s nothing terrible but four to six weeks rest from top level competition is the order of the day; and it goes without saying that is what we will do. We are all extremely disappointed that he will not be making his presence felt at both these shows but trust everyone understands that his welfare is paramount”.
“He is fine to be ridden and exercised gently so we are still aiming to parade him at Olympia. He is such a character, who could possibly deprive him of being in the spotlight once again, especially when it is on home soil at such a special show!”.
Nick Skelton, who was shortlisted as a nominee for BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award as a result of his tremendous Individual Gold medal win at Rio 2016 will be making appearances throughout the week at Olympia. Winning Individual Gold, he made history for Great Britain as it was the first that had ever been brought home for Showjumping. To achieve this at the age of 58 years, having recovered from a broken neck and numerous other injuries, has inspired people on a global level that it is never too late to participate in sport. BBC Sports Personality of the Year takes place on Sunday 18th December 2016 in Birmingham and will be broadcast live on the Sunday evening.
