ALEXANDERS HORSEBOXES BRITISH SHOWJUMPING SCOPE FESTIVAL - MONDAY

It’s that time of year again.  All roads led to the Staffordshire County Showground as showjumping competitors and enthusiasts camped out for a week at one of the biggest national shows in the country.

It was the round of the day when Jodie Hall-McAteer gave her all and Dazzle II matched her fervour as the pair clinched the Animo children on horses title to shouts of encouragement from spectators.  They relegated Jack Whitaker into second and third on Saveur and Native De Vesquerie.

It was only the second big show for Dazzle – a winner of shows Grand Prix for Louise Whitaker in 2011 – since May 2013.

“It’s all down to Louise’s training and groundwork,” said Jodie, 14, who collected second and fourth in the Longines Global Champions Tour two star in London with this 13-year-old by Kannan and out of a Cavalier Royale mare.

“I’ve waited so long to get Dazzle back, this is amazing.”

Louise Saywell netted the much coveted HOYS qualification on the Dutch-bred seven-year-old Cuprice VIII in the EquestrianClearance.com Newcomers Masters.

“She missed out by one at South View in the newcomers and again just missed grade C qualification at Norfolk,” said Louise, who bought the mare from Allan Robertson in April.

“She was only broken in last year so is behind all the other seven-year-olds, but she’s straightforward and is catching up.”

Michaela Huntington triumphantly took the Equilibrium Products discovery championship with lightning quick turns and an exciting gallop on John Meadows and Kathy Lankshear’s Alegro Z.

“We only travelled up for the day, but the three and a half hour journey was worth it, I’ll fly home on cloud nine,” said Michaela, who has ridden the six-year-old, a 2014 Hickstead novice finalist, since November.

Lincoln based Leonie Aitkenhead claimed the Squibb Demolition Group pony Foxhunter Masters in a hotly contended jump-off with the power-jumping Foxy Lady 55.

“She’s careful with a good technique,” said Leonie, who took over the ride from James Whitaker two years ago on the Ramzes sired 10-year-old bred by Charlotte Platt.

Leonie is hoping to go one better at HOYS this time.  The pair finished second in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers final last year, and will also contend the Pony Showjumper of the Year title after winning the qualifier at Wales and West.

Charlie Dawson was crowned Netley Hall Equestrian Pony Discovery champion with Kerry Grimster’s Westcoast Express.

The seven-year-old, a home-bred by Fairman, joined Charlie 4 months ago and was named after a train.

2013 Pony British novice champions Matthew Edwards and Arrow Head Quiver made a winning return to seize the Marnic Groundworks Pony Restricted Rider 1m championship by more than two sec.

Shropshire based Matthew and his 18-year-old pony, a member of the gold medal winning team at the Welsh HPI, have qualified for the HOYS 138cm.

“He’s a gentleman and loves to jump,” said Matthew.
