2nd place finish for British Showjumping’s Team Cavalor in Lisbon CSIO 3* Nations Cup

Friday 27 May 2016

The British Showjumping team, competing under the banner of Team Cavalor, in the  CSIO 3* FEI Furusiyya Nations Cup show in Lisbon finished joint 2nd with home nation Portugal last night behind Spain who took the title.

Anna Edwards from Clevedon, Avon with her own 10 year-old bay gelding Blazer B took the role of pathfinder under the guidance of Chef d;Equipe Tony Newbery.  Her first round saw 4 penalties accrued when they rolled a top pole from its cups.  a score that was then mirrored by Laura Robinson from Northallerton, North Yorkshire with her father Geoffrey’s 12 year-old bay gelding Jonti who was next to go for the team.

Tim Wilks with Quelbora Merze, a 12 year-old chestnut gelding owned by InShowjumpers produced a foot-perfect round to deliver a clear and zero penalty score with Louise Saywell from Nottingham riding Dassler, an 8 year-old bay gelding owned by Irish rider Billy Twomey also delivering a fantastic clear in her role as anchor.

As the first round drew to a close GB were sitting in 3rd place behind Spain and France who had retained a zero penalty score at the halfway stage. The second round saw all riders come forward again with Anna Edwards producing a brilliant performance albeit just outside the time allowed of 84 seconds to pick up a time penalty.  Laura Robinson broke the finish line with 8 penalties being allocated due to an unfotunate  two fences being lowered on the course.

Tim Wilks posted what proved to be one of only a handful of double clears achieved within the competition when he came out and delivered yet another clear in Round 2 drawing much admiration from the live commentary team reporting on the event.  For Louise Saywell, it was an unfortunate downward turn in Round 2 which saw them becoming the drop score they picked up 17 penalties in total.

Finishing on a total of 13 penalties saw GB on a level footing with Portugal to take joint 2nd place whilst Spain took pole position finishing with just 4 penalties.   Belgium took 3rd place on 23 penalties whilst France had  seen a u-turn in performance with them picking up 24 penalties in the 2nd round to slide down the line into 5th place just ahead of Italy who finished in 6th with 38 penalties.
