The Dodson & Horrell 0.85m and 0.95m National Amateur Second Rounds held at Sparsholt College in Winchester, Hampshire on Saturday proved popular with competitors with fifty-three coming forward for the 0.85m class and thirty-seven for the 0.95m.

The aim for every competitor on Saturday was to qualify for the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships, which take place at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool during the 18th – 22nd November 2015 and with twelve qualifying places up for grabs in each second round, spectators were treated to a day of fierce competition.

Twenty-seven of the fifty-three initial starters progressed through to the jump off after producing a first round clear and fourteen then went on to deliver a double clear, which left competitors facing a nervous wait as the qualification places were allocated.

The winning round came early on in the jump off and it was produced by 12 year-old Rhiannon Watson from Chessington, Surrey and she partnered Polar Bear II, a 14 year-old grey gelding owned by Keith Tollick. Drawn third to go in jump off, this combination produced their double clear in a time of 36.54 seconds, a time which was to prove unbeatable.

Catherine Osmond Smith from Emsworth, Hampshire secured second with her own 7 year-old piebald Pauldarys Abracadabra. Two quick clear rounds from this combination saw them complete the jump off in 37.30 seconds.

Sophie Kelly from Camberley, Surrey took third place on her own 8 year-old grey mare Silver Bullet after they produced their second foot perfect round in 37.53 seconds.

An additional nine riders also went on to secure their qualification for the Dodson & Horrell 0.85m National Amateur Championship Final.

Julie Milkins from Winscombe, Somerset fought off thirty-six other combinations on Saturday to take the top spot in the 0.95m National Amateur Second Round on her own 17 year-old dark bay mare Granita II.

In a twenty-horse jump off, Julie and Granita II were drawn as the penultimate combination to go and they used this to their advantage as they knew exactly what they needed to do in order to be with a shot of taking the win and duly achieved this with their double clear in 38.24 seconds.

Second place went to Laura Stringfellow from Newbury, Berkshire with KEC Cocktail Hour, an 8 year-old bay gelding owned by David Mason. This combination also benefitted from a late draw in the jump off and they delivered their double clear in 43.93 seconds.
